What weighs 14.6 TONS??? All the debris on Lake Blue Ridge that was removed during the Lake Blue Ridge Civic Association’s Spring Lake Clean-up Event!
The Lake Blue Ridge Spring Lake Cleanup was a coordinated effort by the Lake Blue Ridge Civic Association Members in partnership with the TVA, USFS, Fannin County and GoCo Rolloff Dumpsters.
This year, volunteers of the LBRCA successfully recovered and removed over 14.6 tons of debris from Lake Blue Ridge. As in previous years, a rope corral was constructed adjacent to Morganton Point Recreation Area boat launch several weeks in advance in order for volunteers to collect debris and deposit it inside the corral to be held until the scheduled Friday afternoon and Saturday morning pick-ups during the weekend of May 17 & 18. A front-end loader was provided by Fannin County in order to lift the debris from the water and deposit it into the four large 32 cubic yard dumpsters. Many of these items, including abandoned dock floats, deflated tubes, deck furniture, tires and other debris recovered from all areas of the lake were waterlogged and extremely heavy. These items not only pollute our lake, but if left drifting, could be hazardous to boaters.
Mike Darnell, LBRCA Board Member, stated that “Without the cooperation of the governmental entities and the volunteers from the association, the cleanup would not be possible. One of our primary objectives for the association is to be good stewards of this beautiful lake from which the entire county benefits.”
The next lake clean-up will be planned in the Fall and is anticipated to be another multi-day effort. Individuals who wish to join the organization or assist with the lake clean up can look for information on the association’s web site: LBRCA.org.
