Lake Information

TVA Update: Reservoir Levels

Based on the current performance of the dam and TVA’s understanding of the dam safety risk, we currently have no plans to lower the reservoir. Due to the significant population downstream of this dam we are focused on reducing risks at Blue Ridge Dam to levels which are as low as reasonably possible.

To address the risk, TVA is performing the following activities in the short term:

  • More active surveillance of the dam
  • Installing a siren warning system downstream of the dam
  • Education of stakeholders and the public about risks incurred from living downstream of Blue Ridge Dam

If TVA determines major construction is required, construction would likely not begin before 2024. Lowering the reservoir for construction can’t be ruled out, however, TVA will make every effort to minimize the impacts of any required lowering of the reservoir to the extent possible.

Current levels at Blue Ridge fall within its expected elevation range for this time of year and can be viewed in the plot below or with the latest information anytime at Blue Ridge Operating Guide (tva.com).

Update on Lake Level for Winter:

Numerous LBRCA members have inquired about the lake level, asking if it is done going down for the year. The TVA has not commented directly but points to the Operating Guide which calls for a low point of 1660 ft above sea level by year end. With the lake currently at 1672 ft, that would imply room for a further drop. However, the lake has not dropped to 1660 for several years and the current state of heavy rainfall would seem to make that less likely.

The information below can be helpful in managing your life around the lake. The map is registered with the county’s emergency management organization as a way to identify where you are on the lake if you should have an emergency. Please feel free to make  copy and keep in  your boat.
